Gateway to Europe

Last stop on the Orient Express! If Istanbul is where West meets East, then the Sirkeci Main Station has been Istanbul’s gateway to Europe since it opened on November 3rd, 1890. Its design incorporates both oriental and Turkish styles and shapes. Marble facades include bands of bricks; stained-glass windows with peak arcs and a wide entrance are reminiscent of the Seljukian epoch’s stone portals. The granite-based structure has stones imported from Marseilles, and large tile stoves made in Austria. Light came from 300 gas lanterns. Magnificent in its day, the Sirkeci Station featured beautiful terraces that led down to the sea. (tcdd) Sirkeci Tren İstasyonu ISTANBUL (2007)
